Sulglicotide is a sulphated glycopeptide derived from porcine duodenum with ulcer healing and gastrointestinal protective properties and cytoprotective activity which is not absorbed from the gut and produces its effects solely in the gastrointestinal lumen as observed with sucralfate.
Sulglicotide is obtained by extraction from the duodenum of pigs, enzymatic proteolysis, repeated purification and final sulfatation. The molecular mass of Sulglicotide is in the range of 1-1.5 x 106 Daltons when determined by Low Angle Laser Light Scatter (LALLS).
Effects of sulglicotide on gastric mucosa:
- Protection of gastric mucosa from alcohol, NSAIDs damage;
- Stimulation of gastric mucous;
- Stimulation of bicarbonates secretion;
- Stimulation of synthesis and local release of prostaglandins;
- Increase of mucosal microcirculation (flux);
- Inactivation of enzymes of Helicobacter pylori
Gentium supplies sulglicotide to international pharmaceutical companies who market the drug product in their own countries.
